App Store metadata limits
| Field | Limit | Indexed for search |
|---|---|---|
| App name | 30 characters | Yes |
| Subtitle | 30 characters | Yes |
| Keyword field | 100 bytes | Yes, hidden from users |
| Promotional text | 170 characters | No |
| Description | 4,000 characters | No |
The keyword field is measured in bytes, not characters. English letters take one byte each, but accented letters (é, ü, ç) take two and Japanese, Chinese or Korean characters take three, so a localized keyword field holds far fewer characters.
How to fill the keyword field
- Commas, no spaces. Write photo, editor, collage, not photo, editor, collage. Each space costs a byte.
- Single words beat phrases. The App Store combines words from your name, subtitle and keyword field, so habit, tracker also matches “habit tracker”.
- Don't repeat. Words already in your name or subtitle are indexed. Repeating them in the keyword field adds nothing.
- Skip plurals, “app” and category names. Apple lists these as space you can use better.
- No competitor or trademarked names. They are a common reason for App Review rejections.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters is the App Store keyword field?
The keyword field holds 100 bytes, not 100 characters. English letters take one byte each, accented letters two, and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters three, so localized keyword fields fit fewer characters.
Should I put spaces after commas in the keyword field?
No. Separate keywords with commas only, like photo, editor, collage. Spaces after commas count toward the limit and add nothing. Spaces inside a phrase are fine.
Should I repeat words from my app name in the keyword field?
No. The App Store already indexes the words in your app name and subtitle, and combines them with the keyword field. Repeating them wastes space you could use for new words.
Does the App Store description affect search rankings?
On the App Store, search uses the app name, subtitle and keyword field; Apple advises against stuffing keywords into the description. Write the description for people deciding whether to download.
How long can the App Store app name and subtitle be?
Both can be up to 30 characters. Put your most important keyword in the name if it reads naturally, and use the subtitle for the next most important ones.
